Can a vape display be adjusted for different product sizes?

If you’ve ever walked into a vape shop, you’ve probably noticed that one thing that’s easy to miss at first but makes a huge difference in how products sell: display setup. As a vape display supplier, I get asked this question all the time, usually from shop owners pulling their hair out because their new 5000-puff disposables won’t fit the same stands they used for 1500-puff models, or premium box mods feel cramped next to the smaller pod systems. The short answer is yes—adjusting a vape display for different product sizes isn’t just possible, it’s what we design most of our displays to do. But there’s more to it than just moving a shelf up or down, and I’ve learned a lot about what works (and what doesn’t) from watching shop owners struggle through busy weekends and quiet weekdays alike. Vape Display

I started in this business about eight years ago, back when most vape displays were one-size-fits-all, metal stands with fixed shelves that only worked for the tiny, sleek pod systems that were popular around 2015. Those displays were cheap, but they were a nightmare once disposable vapes blew up a few years later. Suddenly, every shop had dozens of 6-inch tall disposable devices that stuck out awkwardly from the old stands, and some of the bulkier rechargeable mods wouldn’t even sit on the shelves without tipping over. One small shop owner I worked with in Detroit told me she lost almost 20% of her mod sales in a month because her old display made every mod look like an afterthought next to the giant disposables. That’s when I realized adjustable displays weren’t a luxury—they were a necessity for vape brands and shop owners who needed to cater to every type of customer.

The first thing most people get wrong about adjustable vape displays is thinking “adjustable” means one setting fits all. It’s not that simple. Disposables, for example, come in three main size categories these days: slim, standard, and oversized. Slim disposables are usually under 4 inches tall, designed to fit in a pocket without bulk, while standard ones are 4 to 5 inches, the most common size you see in convenience stores. Oversized disposables, which hit the market around 2021 for 10,000 puffs or more, can be 6.5 inches tall and much thicker than older models. A display that works for slim disposables won’t have enough clearance for oversized ones, and if you set the shelf too low for slim models, you waste space that could be used for higher-margin products like mods or tank systems.

Our first adjustable display line was a basic wall unit with slots where you could slide plastic pegs to move shelves. It worked, but customers kept complaining that the pegs would slip, especially when they loaded the shelves with heavier box mods. I spent six months testing different peg designs, finally landing on ones with a tiny rubber tab that locks into place when you push the peg in. That small change turned a finicky display into something shop owners could adjust in 30 seconds or less, even when their hands were full with products. I still remember a shop owner in Miami telling me he adjusted his display three times in one Saturday alone: first in the morning for disposables, then midday when a big shipment of mods came in, and again at closing when he rearranged for last-minute customers looking for pod systems. That’s the kind of feedback that makes the small tweaks worth it.

But adjusting for size isn’t just about shelf height. Depth is another big factor that most people overlook. Pod systems and smaller disposables look best when they sit flush against the back of a display shelf, but bulkier mods and disposable tanks need an extra inch or two of space to feel visible without looking crowded. If you have a display with fixed depth, you either have empty space behind the small products or you can’t fit the larger ones at all. We solved that problem with adjustable depth shelves that extend and retract with a simple pull on the front edge. It’s a feature that sounds simple, but it’s made a huge difference for customers who carry multiple product lines. One client in Austin told me he used to have two separate displays: one for disposables and one for mods. Now he has one adjustable display that holds both, cutting his floor space usage by almost half and saving him thousands of dollars in rent every year.

Of course, not all vape products are packaged the same way, so display adjustability has to account for packaging size too. A lot of premium disposables come in rectangular boxes that are 2 inches thick, while the standard blister packs for pod systems are only half that. If you set the shelf depth for the thick boxes, the slim blister packs will shift around, and if you set it for the slim ones, the thick boxes fall off the back. We added adjustable dividers to our newer display lines to fix that. The dividers slide along the shelf and lock in place, so you can section off areas for different product types, each with its own depth setting. That way, a shelf can hold three thick disposable boxes next to two slim pod packs, all secure and evenly spaced. I’ve had shop owners tell me this feature alone made them upgrade to our displays, because it eliminated the need for separate display bins and made the whole wall look organized, not cluttered.

There’s also the matter of weight. A lot of adjustable displays on the market are made of thin, cheap plastic that bends or breaks when you load a shelf with bulk products. Box mods, for example, can weigh twice as much as a disposable vape, so if you adjust a shelf that’s meant for slim disposables to hold a heavy mod, it will sag over time. That’s a common mistake we see new customers make when they switch from fixed shelves. To avoid that, we design our adjustable displays with reinforced brackets and thicker metal frames that can support up to 20 pounds per shelf, even when adjusted to the tallest or deepest setting. We also include a small weight guide with every display, so shop owners know which shelf positions are best for different product weights. It seems like a minor detail, but it’s saved countless displays from breaking, and it’s cut down on customer complaints about products falling off or getting damaged.

I know what some of you are thinking: “Why go through all this trouble when I can just buy a display designed for one product type?” The answer is simple: vape products change fast. Five years ago, the most popular disposable was 1500 puffs. Today, it’s 5000, 10,000, even 15,000 puffs, and that number keeps going up every year. Shop owners who invest in one-size-fits-all displays a few years ago are stuck replacing them when the next product trend hits. Adjustable displays give you flexibility to adapt, without throwing out a whole display unit every time a new product comes out. That’s not just good for shop owners—it’s good for brands too, because they can display their products properly regardless of where they’re placed. I’ve worked with a few small vape brands that started selling at local convenience stores, then moved to bigger smoke shops, and now sell online. Their display size and setup changed every step of the way, but our adjustable displays kept working for them, no matter the location or product line.

Of course, there are limits to what adjustable displays can do. You can’t make a display designed for countertop use work as a standing floor unit, and you can’t turn a display for slim disposables into something that fits large portable vaporizers. But for 90% of the products on the market today—disposables, pod systems, box mods, small tanks—adjustable displays work perfectly, as long as they’re designed with the right features. The key is to look for displays that let you adjust both height and depth, have sturdy locking mechanisms for shelves and dividers, and can handle different product weights. Cheap displays that only adjust height and have flimsy parts will end up causing more problems than they’re worth, so it’s worth investing in quality when you’re making this kind of purchase.

I’ve seen too many shop owners make the mistake of choosing the cheapest adjustable display they can find, only to have to replace it a year later when the shelves start slipping or breaking. One shop in Chicago tried that a few years ago, and told me that in 12 months, they’d gone through three different adjustable displays. When they switched to ours, they told me it was the last display they’d ever need to buy, because it adjusted to every product they sold and was built to last. That’s the kind of reputation I want our company to have: not just selling displays, but selling solutions that grow with your business.

If you’re a shop owner trying to figure out how to display new product sizes without rearranging your whole store, or a brand looking for a display that works across different retail locations, adjustable vape displays are absolutely the way to go. It’s not just a matter of “can it be adjusted”—it’s about designing displays that are meant to adapt, so you don’t have to choose between fitting your current products and leaving room for what’s next. Every time I get a call from a customer who’s tired of their outdated display and ready to make a change, I know our adjustable units are the right fit.

At the end of the day, a good display does more than just hold products. It makes products look appealing, encourages customers to pick them up, and ultimately drives sales. When a display can adjust to fit different product sizes, it removes one of the biggest barriers to that: frustration. If a customer walks into a shop and sees every product properly displayed, no matter the size, they’re more likely to stay and browse, and more likely to buy something. That’s the value of adjustable displays, and it’s why we’ve made them the centerpiece of our product line.
